From Awareness to Action: How Business are preparing for 2D Barcodes and Trusted Data.

The transition to 2D barcodes is often perceived as a technical change. However, recent industry conversations suggest a far more significant shift is underway, one that impacts how businesses build trust, ensure product authenticity, integrity and engage consumers.

At our latest Solution Partner Seminar Series hosted by GS1 Singapore, industry participants gathered to explore what the move towards 2D barcodes truly means in practice. The strong turnout and active discussions reflected a growing recognition that this transition is not just imminent but essential.

By 2027, GS1 standards will transform product identifications from static barcodes into connected digital identities carrying richer information that links physical products to real-time data across the supply chain.

Rather than serving solely as identifiers, 2D barcodes are evolving into dynamic data carrier, enabling:

  • Enhanced product authentication
  • End-to-end traceability
  • Direct consumer engagement

This shift allows businesses to move from static labelling to data-driven ecosystems, where information can be accessed in real time across the supply chain.

The relevance of this transition is underscored by current industry challenges, including:

  • The rise of counterfeit goods
  • Increasing supply chain complexity
  • Growing consumer demand for transparency

During the session, these issues were explored through practical use cases, demonstrating how GS1 standards can help organisations strengthen product integrity while improving supply chain visibility.

In particular, the use of GS1 Digital Link was highlighted as a key enabler bridging physical products with digital information to support authentication, traceability and consumer trust.

A key highlight of the seminar was the focus on Real-world implementation. Through a live demonstration at the GS1 Singapore Experience Centre, attendees were introduced to solutions such as AccessReal by i-Sprint Innovations. The session illustrated how businesses can monitor product authenticity while reinforcing the importance of moving beyond awareness to actionable adoption.

Several key insights emerged from the session such as:

  • Traceability as a Differentiator where End-to-end visibility is no longer optional but becoming a critical competitive advantage.
  • Combating counterfeit requires more than just physical label, it depends on secure, reliable and verifiable data.
  • Organisations that begin their transition early will be better positioned to capture value and navigate upcoming requirements.

As the industry moves closer to 2027, the transition to 2D barcodes represents an opportunity for businesses to rethink how they operate, connect and scale. More importantly, it is an opportunity to build stronger, more transparent relationship across the value chain, from Manufacturers to Consumers.

The conversation and insights from this seminar underscore a clear message:

The Future of Supply Chain will be built on Trusted, Interoperable data and that the future is already taking shape today.
