Warehouses sit at the centre of every supply chain, where accuracy in receiving, storage, picking, and dispatch determines how efficiently goods keep moving. GS1 standards give warehouse operators a consistent way to identify locations, products, and logistics units, so every scan connects seamlessly to the data behind it.

GS1 identifiers used in warehouse operation

  • GLN (Global Location Number) Identifies the warehouse itself, and can extend to internal locations such as docks, storage zones, and staging areas. GLNs also identify external trading partner locations for accurate consignment routing.
  • GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) Identifies individual trade items as they are received, stored, and picked, so inventory systems reconcile against a single, unambiguous product identifier.
  • SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code) Often called the “license plate” of a pallet or carton, the SSCC uniquely identifies each logistics unit moving through the warehouse. Scanning the SSCC at receiving or dispatch links the physical unit to its full contents via EDI, without manually checking what’s inside.
  • GS1-128 barcode / GS1 Logistics Label The standard label format carrying the SSCC plus supplementary data such as batch/lot number and expiry date, used for warehouse handling and compliance.
  • RFID / EPCIS For warehouses using RFID, item- or case-level tags enable automated read-points at dock doors, racking, or pick zones, giving real-time inventory visibility without manual scanning.

How it works

  1. A pallet or carton is labelled with a GS1 Logistics Label carrying an SSCC.
  2. On arrival, warehouse staff scan the SSCC once at the dock, instantly confirming contents, quantity, and origin against the purchase order or advance ship notice (ASN).
  3. Items are stored, tracked, and picked using GTINs linked to specific GLN storage locations.
  4. On dispatch, the same identification framework confirms outbound accuracy before goods leave the warehouse.
